Apparently I was the very first person to sign up for the Olde Towne 5K on the campus of the University I work for. Which isn’t sad…it shows that I am just really excited to run, right!? But I have always heard that being #1 in a race was bad luck so I was hoping nothing ominous would happen.
Thankfully, it didn’t!
I was thisclose to staying in bed this morning. I just felt off. Whatever that means. But for $15 I wanted my t-shirt.
This was a relatively small race with only 55 pre-registered and it looked like there were maybe 20-30 race day registrations. And being on a college campus it was primarily college aged ‘adults’.
I started near the back of the pack, as always, and felt fairly confident in myself. Hell, I even passed a few people in the first 2 miles. Then right at mile 2 I passed a couple of Glass City Rollers, while going uphill. I was feeling ballsy I guess. I also prayed that they wouldn’t hip check me into oncoming traffic.
They were behind me for the last mile and I ran my ass off so they didn’t get back in front of me. Just as we hit mile 3 I hear someone start to hit a sprint behind me. It was Mother Nature. Hell no was I about to let someone pass me at the finish line…so I met her sprint. First of all, for a couple of ‘old ladies’ we are really fucking fast. Second of all, she is automatically my new favorite person because her sprint made me push myself to kick it into high gear. We finished micro seconds apart from each other.
After I enjoyed two bottles of water and my banana I noticed that I set a new 5K PR today!
Thats right. 33 minutes. I feel really fabulous about that time. It is 5 and a half minutes faster than my 5k from 3 weeks ago.
Turns out…I was the second fastest women in my age bracket (26-39) and I won a trophy!

She even looks like me. Right?!
When I got home I had time to really dig into the massive swag bag they gave us. Honestly, this was a stellar bag. Totally worth the $15 race fee when you factor this in! First there is the obligatory race t-shirt.
Then the entire contents of the swag bag…
I’ll bet the boys loved the tampons.
And there were two 4.5 ish foot long Gatorade towels. Allow me to model…
Honestly, this was a great way to start the day…but my favorite part of it (besides the PR) will always be my trophy.
Please note the REALLY excited trophy smile.
Trophy’s = awesomeness.

And I have a feeling that I will have to go and see a Glass City Rollers Bout sooner than later. They were amazingly nice and it would be nice to see them in action!

I have never received a trophy. Not one. So I am so jealous. And so proud of you.
I’m still waiting for a competition that offers a prize for the laziest and most incompetent, because that trophy will so be mine!
Congrats!
