Saturday Workout – Walk for Lupus 5K. It was not deathly hot but it sure was humid! The Midwest is special (stupid) because if you run in the morning you skip the heat but catch the humidity…if you run in the evening you skip the humidity but catch all of the heat. Ugh, there is no wining. You just have to pick your battle and fight to win. My 5K (that was actually 3.4 miles) was good, especially since I had to take most of the week off because of my small knee injury. Plus, it was faster than my 5K on Wednesday of this week so that is good enough for me!
When I got home Jeffarooni was already hard at work on tearing up the remainder of the deck. It was seriously the most labor intensive looking project that I have seen in a long time…and I am happy that I am terribly clumsy and bad with power tools so I was not expected to help.
I totally would help, of course, because it is my deck too and I care about how it is built and cared for…but I do know my limitations. And I know Jeff’s limitations as well. Jeff doesn’t do the grocery store. I don’t do tools that can cut my fingers off. I have a hard enough time with kitchen knives…let alone a circular saw.
Back to the race today. It was small. Think of the smallest race you were in and then divide the field by 2…and subtract 17. Or something like that. I really think that there were only 25 runners. Tops. And I feel pretty special knowing that I wasn’t the last one to finish, oh yeah! There were 3 people behind me. I finished the 3.1 miles in 36 minutes, which is still 3 minutes slower than my best…but I did get lost for almost a minute or a minute and a half. No shit. I seriously did. This was not the most well marked path at all. Sure, I understood we were taking the ‘long brown trail’ as opposed to the short brown trail…BUT when there are 2 brown trail arrows pointing in opposite directions how the fuck am I supposed to know which way to go? HUH? And when you start running the wrong way for just over a minute you really feel like a dumbass.
And you lose some time….Eh, it happens.
I have an 8 mile run on the radar for tomorrow morning when the weather should be more mild. I am looking at 71* with 97% humidity. Ugh. Shitty, right? But, I’ve got to get more mileage in before my next half. I had to take almost a week off due to this stupid knee issue so I need to really hit the next three weeks HARD. I am also taking my camera on my run tomorrow since I have not taken it in a long time…this way I can give you something to actually look at instead of this boring text that most of you probably glaze over (like I do).
How was your Saturday?
Did you race today?
Do you wish it was perpetually 50*-73* like I do? (perfect running weather in my opinion)

Hi Amanda,
Just read your ‘about me’ page. We started running about the same time! I call myself a ‘back-of-the-packer’ but really that’s my convoluted way of saying ‘slow runner’. At my last running race i saw a lot of shirts that said ‘Slow is the new fast’. So apparently, you and i are so far to the back we’re ahead of the pack!
I love the phrase ‘back of the packer’! Totally fits…and perhaps slow is the new fast. We are at the fast end of the slow movement!
I wish it was perpetually 50-65. Anything above 65 seems way too hot to me.
My Saturday was lame because I am unable to run right now. Mostly we just sat around while I attempted to get caught up on blogs. I hope your 8 miler went well!
Why are you unable to run?? I have not read blogs in like….4 days…which is an eternity in the blog world!
I get overheated easily, so I actually like running when it’s colder. Believe it or not, the ideal temp for me to run is about 40 degrees.
Having run in 20* weather and 90* weather I MUCH prefer running in the 20*. I am faster and don’t get overheated.
Hey there! Thanks for reading/commenting on my blog! I used to live in Toledo! (Born and raised in Lima, graduated from UT, in Cincinnati now.) I turn 30 this week and I’m totally stealing your “30 things” idea.
And I believe that the temperature should perpetually be 60-65 degrees. And then it should be 90 on days that I want to go swimming. And when I do triathlons, it should be 85 degrees for the swim portion, drop to 70 for the bike, and then to 60 for the run. I don’t ask much.
No…you don’t ask for much. What the heck is Mother Nature doing NOT giving you what you want?
I am from Perrysburg, went to BGSU and work at UT now in the alumni office.
SMALL WORLD!
Oh, the irony.
How did I spend my Saturday? Applying pressure to the spurting blood from my finger–which I caught in the electric hedge trimmer.
Ah, splendid! Hedge trimmer…not finger trimmer. I have to write that one down…
Hope you are okay!
