11K on 11.11.2011

I know that I have been mostly absent over the past week and I almost feel bad about it…I was on the couch for most of those days feeling like death after it was peed on by a stray dog so I don’t mind leaving you all in the lurch about if I ran my 11K.

To answer your burning question…I did run.

My sinus infection had cleared up and with the exception of the mucus all dropping straight into my lungs I was feeling pretty good.  I sound like I have whooping cough and I may have parts of my lung that are dislodged due to the extremity of my coughs but I was feeling good.
The race started at an epic 11:11pm and of course that was the coldest evening we had last week.  I believe during the race it was 36*.  So I dressed like a good girl and covered up from head to toe.
Gorgeous, no?

You are probably impressed that I was able to get the lotion pump in the picture…it takes skills people.

Please notice my new DuoDri C9 hat from Target (I did get matching gloves) and my new gaiter (some brand that starts with a C that I have forgotten).  I had actually never known what a gaiter was until I started running.  With my exercise induced asthma running in the cold Ohio weather is hard on my lungs so I always ran with a scarf tied around my nose and mouth to warm the air before it hit my lungs.  Then I spent Friday searching for gaiters at 3 stores before I ended up at Bass Pro Shop in the children’s section to find a fleece gaiter.  I purchased 2 children’s sized gaiters because they were tighter on my neck/face than the adult sizes.  I wasn’t using it for neck warmth, I wanted to focus on it staying put over my nose and mouth.

To report – it worked like a charm.  I am so happy that I bought them, then I didn’t have the ends of the scarf banging around and driving me insane.  This will be a running wardrobe staple during marathon training!

When I decided I was healthy enough to run in the race I knew I would only run for fun and walk whenever my lungs felt tight.  I ran as much as I could and only walked for 30 seconds at a time when I had to.  Sure, I was slower than my average pace but it was also really freaking late for me to be running!
I finished with a blazing time of 1:27:39.  Totally impressive…but I was happy I got out there and ran!
My legs are thanking me still for the run by finding new muscles to make sore everyday.

Did you do anything epic on 11.11.11?
Do you run when you are sick?

I might have to try that children’s sizing idea you came up with! Works well for small peeps like us!

I probably would not work out if I was sick. Too lazy I guess.

I LOVE children’s sizing for certain shirts and other stuff (like a gaiter).

I never work out if I am sick. 11.11 was a first.

Excellent dedication! I don’t like to run while sick but I do LOVE to bike on my trainer while sick… such a good way to get a good sweat going.

Is a trainer like a stand? I never knew if that was the technical name for it…

yep, it’s a bike stand to use your bike indoors.

Great run! I could never stay up until 11, so I’m in awe. :)

I am typically asleep by 10:30pm so this was HARD to do!

Wow, nice job! I own a gaiter, but it makes me feel like I’m suffocating, so I rarely wear it. You are rocking it, though!

I have to wear it or else there is no running. My lungs start to BURN with the cold air.

Woot! I’m glad you got to run!
I love the gaiter my mom got me over 6 years ago when I first started running in the cold.

You are a goddess. I would have taken that excuse of mucus dropping into my lungs as a sign to never run again.

While you were out and about in that get-up, how many banks did you rob?

I had already paid for the race and all…so I wanted to go I guess.

I could rob a few, right?

Awesome job!! I wish we had neat races like 11Ks down here. We only get the normal distances, 5K, 10K ( though very few) and half. Boo.

That’s one thing about our running club and the 2 running stores here…they are kick fucking ass about their races!
How was the vacation?
