Revised Marathon Training Schedule

If there is one thing I hate about being an adult it is being smart and making the right choices.
*Ugh*
Sure, I would love to stay up until midnight every night but then every single day at work will be hell, so I go to bed around 10ish.
I would love to eat my weight in Cadbury Creme Eggs each spring but then I’d be the size of a house.

I would love to run my original marathon training schedule, but with my bad knee acting up, I can’t.
I hate the I can’ts.
In order to make myself feel better I revised my marathon training plan:

(Click on it to make it bigger)

Instead of running 4 days a week as I had planned, I am not running 3 days a week with my weekday’s having a bit higher mileage than before.  i am still down around 5 miles each week and if that is what I need to get my stupid ass knee to my first marathon, then so be it!
I know it is going to take me 18.44 hours to complete this whore so I just need to get through it without needing a golf cart to pick me up.

On the plus side, I am having my knee injectified with some cortisone on Friday morning.  I have zero idea if I can run on my knee right away, but I have a 7 mile race on Saturday so let’s hope so!  I have not had a cortisone shot in about 8+ years so I hope I am not being stupid about this….

How has your week been?  Any fun workouts?
Any cadbury creme eggs?

Hope your knee gets better. My GF had knee troubles DURING her marathon (tennis related). She had had cortisone shots before but it flared up during the race. Fortunately (I think?) she was stubborn enough to finish anyways. I think revising the schedule to work within the limitations of your injury is a great idea.

I think I would be stubborn enough to finish too!

Listen to your body! Normally I think you are supposed to take it easy for 24 hours post cortisone. Good Luck :)

I don’t want to be a debbie downer but from my experience with a cortisone shot is that I was told NO running for at least week. If I were to do that I could rupture the area where the injection was done. So just a heads up that they *might* tell you that on Friday.

BUMMER! But I would take a week off if I needed to. Thanks for the heads up Michel~

Amanda are you able to walk pain-free? There are some training plans that suggest walking your mileage is better than no miles.

Perhaps you could try that (although maybe not on the long run!) and I’ve also heard great things about spinning/biking that keeps folks in good running shape.

I guess it will all depend on what activities your knee is OK with. Good luck!

Yes, I can walk pain-free the majority of the time. Great idea on walking my mileage! I love where your head is at!

I’m sorry that your knee is bothering you! I hope some reduced mileage or maybe getting off the pavement will help!

I hope it does too, thanks Kara!

hopefully the cortisone helps, you need to take care of that knee otherwise it will be writing you letters in the future yelling at you for beating it up so much (if you get RunnersWorld check out the March issue pg 68—it was something i totally related to, i am sure you would as well!)

OK. Sit down. (You do have that bad knee and all.) But here’s the big news:

I have been doing the treadmill almost every single day for the past two weeks!

AND–I brought this little pedaling contraption I have into the office, so I can exercise while I sit and play on the internet–um, I mean work.

I shall be a muscled 110-pound goddess the next time you see me.

Thanks, as always, for the inspiration.

Pedaling contraption? Now I have to stop down and see said contraption….

I have never had a cortisone shot, but I’m pretty sure you can’t run right away on run. Anyways, I hope it helps and you get back to pain-free running soon! And darn you, now I want a Cadbury cream egg! Those things are sugary crack!
